BURBERRY

Thomas Burberry establishes BURBERRY in basingstoke at just 21 years old, in 1856, founded on the principle that clothing should be designed to protect from the British weather.

Steeped in heritage with a signature trench coat collection that dates back to 1800s, Burberry represents quintessential British style. Despite a bump in its road circa the late ’90s, it has become one of the industry’s best-recognised luxury fashion houses.

In 1901, the Burberry Equestrian Knight logo was developed containing the Latin word "Prorsum", meaning "forwards", and later registered it as a trademark in 1909.

Adapted to meet the needs of military personnel, the "trench coat" was born during the First World War due to its being worn by British officers in the trenches. After the war, it became popular with civilians. The Burberry check has been in use since at least the 1920s, primarily as a lining in its trench coats.

Between 2001 and 2005, Burberry became associated with "chav" and football hooligan culture.

Burberry has since evolved and now has taken over three sectors- Burberry Prorsum, Burberry Brit, and Burberry London. Burberry is now known for its beautiful combination of traditional British style and modern flair. English designer Christopher Bailey took over Burberry during the 2000s and turned into the luxurious brand that it is known for across the world.
